Anti-Islanding Electrical Panel

Share Article:

⚡ Anti-islanding electrical panels are essential components in modern energy infrastructure, especially in systems that include renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic installations.

🧭 Role and Functionality
These panels are designed to prevent the isolated operation (islanding) of a renewable energy source in the event of a grid outage. This ensures protection of:

  • The installation’s equipment

  • Maintenance and intervention personnel

  • The public distribution grid

How it works:
The panel continuously monitors grid parameters such as voltage and frequency, instantly detecting any anomalies.
➡️ In the event of a failure, the system automatically disconnects the renewable source, preventing accidental backfeeding of a faulty grid.
➡️ Once normal conditions are restored, reconnection is done safely, following the timing and requirements set by the distribution operator.

⚙️ Construction Components
An anti-islanding panel includes:

  • Anti-islanding relays for voltage and frequency monitoring

  • Contactors for rapid disconnection from the grid

  • Circuit breakers for overload and short-circuit protection
The panels may be equipped with digital interfaces (e.g., HMI display) and can communicate with SCADA or BMS systems for centralized monitoring.

📏 Standards Compliance
These panels are implemented in accordance with:

  • SR EN 62116 – Anti-islanding protection testing

  • IEC 61727 – Interconnection requirements for PV systems

  • I7/2011 – Electrical installation design standard

  • ANRE Order no. 208/2018 – Technical connection requirements

  • ANRE Order no. 228/2018 – Mandatory for systems ≥ 30 kVA

🏭 Applications
Anti-islanding panels are used in:

  • Photovoltaic parks

  • Commercial and industrial PV systems

  • Microgrids with local generation

  • Smart buildings with renewable energy systems

🔒 Implementing an anti-islanding panel is not just best practice — it is a critical measure for the safety, reliability, and legal compliance of renewable energy systems.
